You should all read Diane Ackerman's The Zookeeper's Wife - a book about a zookeeping couple in Warsaw in the 1930s and 1940s. You will especially find powerful the relationship of this non-Jewish couple to the Jews in the ghetto.
Several congregants asked me why I do not have a BLOG. So, now I do, and anyone who would like to post comments for me, to me, or about anything I reflect upon, is welcome to do so.
I haven't read the recommended book, but I am reading the Rebbe's "Judaism in America." It's obviously a great text for a history class, but I'm reading it just for fun, and it's very interesting to hear about how our religion evolved in the New World. It's cool to see that the old stereotype of 3 Jews/4 synagogues seems to be true of our predecessors in the US. Lots of history of traditionalists vs. non-traditionalists and "accommodaters" and "resistors" in the Orthodox wing. For those into non-fiction (a genre I don't read very much), I recommend this one.
The W Rebbe is now into ranking burgers in the Metro DC area. Using a simple ten point scale which evaluates five individual parts (meat, cheese, bun, additions, size/cost) and awards a maximum of 50 points, the tasting panel visits a burger joint twice.
As of the end of May, 2009, the rankings are #1 Ray's Hellburger (Arlington, VA) and #2 Black Market, Garrett Park, MD. #3-14 available on request.
In June, the tasting panel will visit its 15th burger joint, Z-Burger, DC.
